When should you visit a diabetologist?
Diabetology is the branch of medicine that deals with disorders of sugar balance, the treatment of diabetes and the prevention of complications. Diabetes is a disorder of carbohydrate metabolism, during which sugar that has entered the body and is not used floods the tissues.
An abnormal rise in blood sugar can indicate the disease. The pancreas, which does not produce enough of the insulin hormone, may be responsible for its formation, but it may also be the case that the body is insensitive to insulin (insulin resistance, relative insulin deficiency).
In the case of diabetes, we distinguish between prediabetes (a condition before diabetes, where the blood sugar level is higher than the normal value), gestational diabetes, and type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes
It is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. The destruction of insulin-producing cells leads to a lack of insulin, which results in an overturning of the blood sugar level in the body. The disease cannot be cured, but it can be controlled with appropriate treatment (insulin replacement in the form of injections, use of an insulin pump).
Insulin is a hormone produced by beta cells located in the islets of Langerhans of the pancreas, which, according to its role, promotes the incorporation of sugar into the cells.
Type 2 diabetes
In this case, the insulin produced by the body cannot properly exert its blood sugar -lowering effect, i.e. insulin resistance exists. Insulin resistance is caused by a malfunction of the insulin receptors. Type 2 diabetes can be controlled by regular monitoring of blood sugar levels with a balanced, healthy diet, adequate exercise, and in some cases with medication.
